Dr. Robert G. Maxfield died Monday, March 3, 2008 in Claremont, NH
surrounded by his family.
Dr. Maxfield was born on February 1, 1923 in Bloomfield, NJ. He is survived
by Dorothy, his wife of 54 years and his six children: Mary Maxfield of
Lebanon, James Maxfield of Springfield, VT, Dr. Robert G. Maxfield, Jr. of
Lebanon, Margaret Katucki of Somers, NY, Nancy Righi of Brattleboro and
Charles Maxfield of Durham, NC. Also, by 13 grandchildren: Harris, John,
David, Sam, Bradley, Joe, Elisabeth, Kirtley, Rigel, Tommy, Bobby, Charles
and Jack. He is also survived by his brother John F. Maxfield of Naples,
FL. He is predeceased by his mother, Mimsey Bacon Maxfield (1981), his
father, James Harris Maxfield (1963) and his sister Mary Kirtley Sherman
(1980).
Dr. Maxfield was a graduate of the Taft School in Watertown, CT. He
attended Williams College, Class of 1945, where he played golf, basketball
and track. He graduated from New York Medical College, Class of 1946, where
he was a member of the Contin Honor Society. He received his surgical
training at New York City Hospital, where he was Chief Surgical Resident,
and then spent two years as a surgical fellow at the Mayo Clinic in
Rochester, MN. He served as captain in the US Army Medical Corps and served
from 1948 to 1950 as a surgeon in the 10th General Hospital, Manila,
Philippines.
He practiced general surgery for almost 40 years, serving Claremont General
Hospital and Valley Regional Hospital, Newport Hospital, New London
Hospital, Springfield (VT) Hospital and Alice Peck Day Hospital in Lebanon.
He was Chief of Surgery for 22 years at the Claremont General/Valley
Regional Hospital. He served as president of multiple medical staffs, a
member of the New England Surgical Society, and President of the New
Hampshire Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. He contributed six
articles to the national surgical literature on carcinoma of the breast, GI
endoscopy, and the use of physician assistants in emergency room coverage.
His primary interest in life was his family. In his free time he enjoyed
gardening, fly fishing, bird hunting, tennis and the Red Sox.
Friends may call at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street in Claremont
on Wednesday, March 5th, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at One O'
Clock in the afternoon at St. Mary's Church with Rev. Shawn M. Therrien,
Pastor, officiating.
Interment will be at a later date in St. Mary's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations by made to The Robert and
Dorothy Maxfield Scholarship Endowment Fund at Dartmouth Medical School.
