Douglas E. Whitney of Broad Street in Claremont, passed away peacefully at
the Haven Health Center of Claremont on March 28, 2008 after 88 years of
fulfilled life.
He was a native and life long resident of Claremont, born on September 16,
1919 the third son of Justin and Marie (Pankratz) Whitney.
He graduated from Stevens High School in the Class of 1937 and joined the US
Navy. While in the service, Douglas spent 20 years traveling the world on
various tours of duty. These tours took him to all parts of the globe from
the Philippines to the Mediterranean and from Alaska to Antarctica. While
on tour in the Mediterranean he met Eliane Daleggio in Istanbul, Turkey whom
he married in 1951. After retiring from the US Navy in 1957, he eventually
settled in with a 17 year position as a letter carrier for the US postal
service in Claremont. He retired from that position in 1975 and took on
part time employment as a furniture restorer as well as custodian for Indian
Head Bank (later Fleet Bank). After retirement in 1984, Douglas also served
as Assistant Mayor of Claremont, Chairman of the Claremont Historic District
Commission and as President of the local chapter of the National Association
of Retired Federal Employees.
The surviving family includes his wife, Eliane C. Whitney of Claremont; two
sons, Douglas T. Whitney of Surry and Scott J. Whitney of Claremont; three
grandchildren, Tanda M. Whitney, Justin R. Whitney and Katherine A. Whitney
all of Claremont; niece, Joan Hutcheon of Cornish and nephew, Bruce Whitney
of Sanbornton.
He was pre-deceased by three brothers, Elwin Whitney in 1925, Robert Whitney
in 1982 and Howard Whitney in 2002.
Per Douglas' s request, there will be no calling hours or funeral service.
Interment will be later in the spring in the West Claremont Burial Grounds
in Union Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Douglas requests that donations be made to the Sullivan
County Humane Society, P.O. Box 111, Claremont, NH 03743.
