George Albert McGrath, 91, of Bank Ave., in Claremont, NH, died Saturday, June 14, 2008 at the Valley Regional Hospital following a period of failing health.

George was born in Central Islip, LINY on April 16, 1917 the son of Andrew and Winifred (Mulroney) McGrath and had resided in Claremont since 1949.  He attended Central Islip schools and was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Army-Air Force.

After the war, he worked in the health care field for a number of years.

Following his marriage to Alberta “Betty” Lewko in 1949, he and his wife moved to Claremont.  After a brief stint in the grocery business, he worked for Joy Manufacturing Company for many years before retiring as a group leader in the stock room.  At Joy, he was a member and local official of the union.  He later worked for Sullivan County Rehab. (currently, Pathways) for five years.

He was a communicant of St Joseph Church and a former member of the Holy Name Society.

He had been an avid golfer from childhood until his late 80’s.  He also loved music and enjoyed singing and was proud of his Irish heritage.  He was a devoted to his family, especially his grandchildren.  His family and friends will miss his kindness and his sense of humor.

The surviving family includes his wife, of Claremont; one daughter, Melissa A. Sauer and her husband Thomas of Farmington; two grandchildren, Nicholas and  Nora both of Farmington; several sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law and nieces and nephews.

He was pre-deceased by four brothers, Joseph, John, Edward, and Richard  McGrath, a sister, Mary McGuire and a half sister, Margaret Clarke all of Central Islip.

A memorial service will be held at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street on Friday morning, June 20th at Eleven O’clock.

Interment will follow in Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Funeral Home one hour prior to the services on Friday prior to the services.

The family suggests that donations may be made in his memory to the charity of one’s choice.
