Harold Cedric Gobin, Jr., 78, of Old Newport Road in Claremont, died Wednesday evening, July 9, 2008 at the Valley Regional Hospital.

He was born in Newport, NH on August 13, 1929 in his home on Maple Street, the son of Harold C. and Irlene (Murray) Gobin, Sr. and had resided in Claremont and Newport all his life.  He was a graduate of Towle High School in the Class of 1946 and immediately started working in waste hauling, logging and forest management before he entered the military during the Korean War.  He served with distinction and was a decorated veteran of the US Army infantry, receiving the Bronze Star.  After the military he went back to work for Palazzi Construction where he worked on the building of the Littleton Moore Dam.  He also worked for Osmose Corporation where he installed telephone poles and power lines throughout New England.  He worked for over a decade for HP Welch Trucking Co. as a tractor trailer driver until 1969.  He also owned and managed a 5000 chicken poultry farm during this time.  In the early sixties, Harold started a tent rental and catering business with his wife, Armene.  Later they managed and owned several rental properties.   In 1975, Harold started a small company called H C Gobin Trucking which is now known as Gobin Disposal Service (GDS).  Once retired, he remained active in several  entrepreneurial activities such as firewood, trucking and storage rentals.

He was a lifelong member of the NRA, the VFW Post 808, the Union Episcopal Church, Claremont Hiram Masonic Lodge #9 and the Foresters of America.

He enjoyed his hobbies which included camping, antique trucks and touring.  He thoroughly enjoyed his family and was very involved in family activities.  He was an avid Red Sox fan and a dedicated truck collector.  He owned over 150 trucks in his lifetime. 

The surviving family includes his wife, Armene (Pintello) Gobin of Claremont whom he married on Feb. 14, 1958 and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year;  four sons, David C. Gobin and his wife, Bonnie of Claremont, Donald M. Gobin and his wife, Joy of Grantham, George Harrison and his wife, Claudia of Austin, TX and Dr. Manuel Sumares and his wife, Clara of Braga, Portugal; nine grandchildren, Meredith Gobin, Amelia Gobin, Olivia Gobin, Elisabeth Gobin, Julie Harrison, Greg Gobin, Jonas Sumares, David Sumares and Nate Harrison; one aunt, Etta Barton  of Grantham; also nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was pre-deceased by his parents and one brother, Ronald Gobin, Sr.

Friends may call at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street in Claremont on Sunday evening from 6 to 8 PM.

Funeral services will be held Monday morning, July 14th at Eleven O’clock in the Union Episcopal Church with Rev. Marthe F. Dyner Rector, officiating.  Interment, with full military honors provided by the Claremont American Legion Post #29 will follow in West Claremont Burial Grounds in Union Cemetery.
