Normand B. Paulhus, 84, of Charlestown, NH passed
away at his home, with his wife at his side, December 9th after a long illness.
Norm was a combat veteran of the storied 101st
Airborne Division, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He was in the 1st Battallion, C Company, and saw combat as a machine gunner at
Alsace and Haguenau before helping the 101st liberate the Jewish Concentration camp at Landsberg. V.E. day was declared while the
101st was at Berchtesgaden, where Hitler's infamous Eagle's Nest retreat was located. The famed 101st was created and disbanded for
WWII, so Norm was one of the paratroopers having the distinction to serve in the 101st, 506th, and finish Army service as a member of
the 82nd Airborne. Norm was part of the WWII victory parade in NYC.
Combat service did not define Norm, flying did. He
had more than 14,000 hours as the Pilot of several types of aircraft, including unpowered gliders, single engine airplanes in several
classes, and helicopters. He was the owner of and restored several aircraft, including a seaplane operated from the local Connecticut
River, and personal aircraft that he flew from his home in Charlestown. Norm taught many people to fly, and was well known by pilots
in the New England area. He was President of the local flying club, EAA Chapter 61 that built and flew an airplane. He was also a
charter and a corporate pilot.
For more than a decade, Norm owned and operated a
Duraclean franchise in the twin state valley. He lived in Charlestown for 50 years, was a member of the St. Catherine of Siena
church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He was born August 4, 1924, the eldest child of
Doria and Exilia (Lavallee) Paulhus of Cumberland, RI (both deceased) with brothers Clarence (deceased), Walter and sister Audrey (Pacholski).
Norm is survived by his wife of 58 years Shirley (Marcoux) Paulhus, and his children Ann (Preus), Brenda (Jewell), Cheryl (and George
Cannon), Normand II, Lisa (and Jim Lovell), Cindy (Paulhus) and Gary Crosby, Lawrence (and Linda), Valerie (and Matt Keller), and
Albert. He has 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Friends may call at the Charlestown Memorial Chapel, 34 Main Street in Charlestown on Friday, Dec. 12th from 5 to 8 PM.
A Mass of Christian burial was be held
Saturday, Dec. 13th at 11 AM at St. Catherine of Siena Church with Rev. Father Michael Gendron, Pastor, and Fr. Shawn M.
Therrien, Pastor of St Mary's Church in Claremont
Co-officiating.
Burial will follow in St. Catherine
Cemetery with military honors.
A reception will be held at the church
hall immediately following the burial.
