Carrie Augusta Guild, 90, of Winter Street in Claremont died Monday evening, May 11, 2009 at Sullivan County Health Care. She was born in Weathersfield, VT on October 31, 1918, the daughter of Elwin Joseph and Nellie Valentine (Heald) Spaulding. She was born in the same house as her father was. Some of the time she rode to high school with shop workers, and she also worked for her board at various homes while going to high school. Mrs. Guild graduated from Springfield High School in the Class of 1936. She lived all her life in the Weathersfield and Claremont area. Mrs. Guild worked as a proof-reader at Jones and Lamson Machine Co. and at the Claremont Post Office as a rural route carrier. Then she became a full-time homemaker, wife and mother. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, food preservation, sewing, knitting, and rug braiding. She also was a 4-H sewing leader and fashion review judge for many years. She enjoyed bird-watching and could identify many birds by their songs. She was a member of the Union Episcopal Church for over fifty years, was a choir member, was in the Social Circle and cooked thousands of meat balls for her church suppers. Carrie was a former member of the Eastern Star, the Rebekah’s, the Ascutney Home Dem, the Rolling Wheels Sams: of the Good Sam Camping Association, a grange member for 74 years and a member of the Connecticut River Grange #518 since the 1957. She was the widow of Carl Selkirk Guild, Jr. whom she married on March 6, 1953 and he died, February 1, 2007. The surviving family includes one daughter, Cindy Fitzgibbons and her husband, Raymond; two grandchildren, Jeremy Fitzgibbons and Julie Fitzgibbons all of Cavendish, VT; one sister, Kathryn Kesek of Bellows Falls, VT and nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her parents, one brother, Irwin Spaulding and one niece. Funeral Services will be held Friday, May 15th at One-Thirty in the afternoon in the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street in Claremont with Pastor Abraham Gross, officiating. Interment will follow in the West Claremont Burying Grounds. Friends may call at the Funeral Home on Friday from Twelve Noon until the services at 1:30 PM. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations may be made in her memory to the Sullivan County 4-H Foundation, In Care Of, UNH Co-Operative Extension, 24 Main St., Newport, NH 03773 or the Connecticut Valley Home Care, Adult Day Out Program, 958 John Stark Highway, Newport, NH 03773-2609. |
