Dorothy F. Schumann, 85, of the Acworth Road in Charlestown, NH, died Friday morning, April 10, 2009 at the Franklin Hospital.

She was born in Washington (Coventry), RI on September 10, 1923 the daughter of Frank J. and Mildred P. (Sherman) Rathbun and had resided in Charlestown since 1953.

She graduated from Coventry High School in 1939 and served as a Navy WAVE for three years during and after World War II.  Mrs. Schumann worked as a bookkeeper for Farm Credit Associations after getting out of the Navy.

She was a member of Charlestown Congregational Church, the Charlestown Historical Society, the Westminster, VT Historical Society, a Life Member of the N.H. Society of Mayflower Descendents, and Sampson WWII Veterans Association, member of WAVES National, Granite State WAVES,  the National Rathbun Family Association, Charlestown Federation Women’s Club, Charlestown Senior Citizen’s Club, and many other organizations.  She was a former Church Treasurer and Auditor.

She was the widow of Gerhart F. Schumann whom she married on Nov. 25, 1950 and he died May 1, 1982.  She was also pre-deceased by her parents and a brother, Edward F. Rathbun.

The surviving family includes two sons, Gary R. Schumann and his wife, Gail and David G. Schumann all of Charlestown; one step-grandson, Jeremy Martin of Portsmouth; two sisters, Malissie R. Bowen of R.I. and Frances Roy of R.I. and Venice, FL; nieces and nephews and cousins.

Friend may call at the Charlestown Memorial Chapel, 34 Main Street in Charlestown on Monday afternoon and evening from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday afternoon, April 13th at Two O’clock at the Charlestown Congregational Church with Rev. Susan Grant Rosen, Pastor, officiating.

Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Charlestown Congregational Church and the Charlestown Senior Center.
