Emmett G. Gavin, 84, of Jeff Drive in Charlestown, NH died unexpectedly November 29, 2009 at the Springfield Hospital. He was born in Barre, Vermont on September 18, 1925 the son of John and Jennette (Smith) Gavin. Emmett was a veteran of WWII serving in the USMC aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Langley in the South Pacific. After the Military Emmett work at the Barre Granite quarries then with Bryant Grinder Corp from 1950 to 1970’s as a machinist and then chief steward. Emmett was the driving force in forming the union at Bryant’s. He was popular with the employees and also a skilled negotiator for the union during his chief stewardship and later as business agent for local 218 machinist. Emmett owned and operated a successful business known as Gavin’s Clock Shop in Charlestown. Many of his customers admired his expertise and knowledge in clock repair. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion. A member of the Time Keeper’s Society and the National Association of Watch & Clock Collector’s Inc. The family includes his longtime companion, Betty McLaughlin of Charlestown, NH; one daughter, Diane M. Lawrence and her husband, William of Langdon, NH; one son, Alan E. Gavin of Claremont, NH; one granddaughter, Erica M. Aubin and her husband, Austin of Charlestown; one great grandson, Liam Aubin; sisters, Dorothy Ryan of North Springfield, VT and Mildred McIntrye of Bethel CT; also nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held Friday Afternoon, December 4th at 2 O’clock at the Charlestown Memorial Chapel, 34 Main Street in Charlestown with Rev. Susan Grant Rosen, Pastor, of the Charlestown Congregational Church officiating. Friends and family may call from 12 to 2pm prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Pine Crest Cemetery on the Old Claremont Road, Charlestown, NH with full military honors provided by the Charlestown VFW and the Fall Mountain JROTC. A reception will follow at the Charlestown VFW on Lovers Lane Road. |
