George Herbert Oliver, 83, of 243 Broad Street in Claremont, died Sunday, May 24, 2009 at Elmwood Center.

He was born in Malden, MA on Feb. 22, 1926 where he was raised and educated before the family relocated to Claremont. He is the son of Leland and Leona (Hodgkins) Oliver.

George joined the US Navy when he was 17 years old. During his 7 years in the service, he was part of the amphibious force in Normandy, France, during World War II, and was a member of the occupation forces in Japan after the war ended. He also served on a destroyer in Korea in 1950 and spent 13 months in the reserves. He retired in 1990 from the Claremont Paper Mill where he worked in various positions for over thirty eight years.

He always put his family and friends before himself, always eager to help those in need. He will be missed by all who have known him.

The surviving family includes his wife, Mary Evelyn (Thibault) Oliver of Claremont whom he married on March 13, 1954; three daughters, Liane Westcott and her husband Brett, Carolyn Faucher and her husband George both of Claremont and Joyce Eaton and her husband Rick of Newport; two sons, William Oliver and his wife Donna of Claremont and Jeff Oliver and his wife Wendy of Canaan; nine grandchildren; five great-grand-children and several nieces and nephews.

He was pre-deceased by an infant daughter, Judith Anne Oliver; a granddaughter, Shelli-Ann Westcott; a sister, Leona MacDonald and a brother, John Sullivan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Joseph Church on Thursday, May 28th at 11:00am with Rev. Father Stanley J. Piwowar officiating.

Interment will follow in St Mary’s Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Claremont American Legion Post #29.

Friends may call at the Funeral Home Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 PM.
