Robert L. aka,”Druggist & Smitty” Smith, 75, of Highland Avenue in Claremont, died Thursday, June 25, 2009 at his home. He was born in Shelton, CT on January 25, 1934 the son of Edward and Charlotte (Chilberg) Smith. He had resided in Claremont for the past two years, lived in Charlestown for fifteen years and previously in Connecticut. He retired due to disability after 23 years with the International Union of Operating Engineers AFL-CIO #478 in Hamdon, CT where he worked as a crane operator. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict where he served in the US Army. Smitty was a member of the American Legion Post #29 and Past Commander of the Legion Post in Connecticut. He was a life member of the VFW and a Past Commander of the VFW Post #808 in Claremont. He was also a member of the Polish American Citizens Club, the Huns Motorcycle Club and the Wolfpack Motorcycle Club both of Connecticut. The surviving family includes his wife, Lynda J. (Cutter) Smith of Claremont whom he married on July 3, 1999; one daughter, Shelly Smith of Seymour, CT; several step-children; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Doris Wood of Killingworth, CT and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by three brothers, George, Edward and Spencer. Friends may call at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street in Claremont on Friday evening from 6 to 8 PM. Bikers welcome. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning, July 4th at Ten O’clock at the Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Winn Alley, Pastor of the First Congregational Church, officiating. There will be a celebration of his life after the funeral at the VFW Post 808 in Claremont. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the S.P.C.A., P.O.
