Beloved Husband, Father, & Grandfather

Colonel Stephen Ernest Butterfield passed away on April 24, 2009 in Wyndmoor, just outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was 97 years young.

Col. Butterfield was born in Dover, New Hampshire on June 4, 1911, the son of Ernest Warren Butterfield of Vermont and Edith May Thompson Butterfield of Maine. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1932 with an A.B., Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College in 1933 with a degree in Civil Engineering, graduate work at Trinity College, and a Master’s degree from Yale University in 1939. He served as a United States Army officer during and following WW II in Europe, where he received numerous Medals of Honor. He later served as Logistics Director for the Department of Defense at the Pentagon. As a civilian, he worked as a civil engineer in New Hampshire and Connecticut, and was the City Traffic and Traffic Safety Engineer for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His residences included New England, Europe, Washington DC, and Philadelphia. Col. Butterfield was an avid skier and reader of non-fiction and was a quiet and humble man, devoted to his wife and family. He shared his love of reading and traveling with his daughters from the time they were young children; instilled in them an insatiable curiosity about the world around them; and taught them to be responsible and deliberate women.

Col. Butterfield is survived by his loving wife of almost 62 years, Erica Janson Butterfield, who devotedly cared for him in their home for many years; his two daughters, Dr. Andrea Christine Butterfield of Hershey, Pennsylvania and Pamela Suzanne Butterfield of Basking Ridge, New Jersey; son-in-law Mark White; and three grandchildren, Alexander, Elizabeth, and Stefan White. Stephen is predeceased by his brother Richard David Butterfield and his sisters Priscilla Butterfield Stephens and Dorothy Butterfield Gormly.

A graveside family gathering will take place at Grout Cemetery near Butterfield Hill in Weathersfield, Vermont on May 2, 2009.
