Stuart Haines, 78, passed away peacefully at New London Hospital on May 19, 2009 with his two daughters by his side. He was born in Northampton, MA to David F. and Stella (Wheeler) Haines. For the past two years he has lived at Woodlawn Care Center in Newport, NH and prior to that he resided in Claremont, NH for 35 years. He was a graduate of Easthampton (MA) High School and Bryant-Stratton School of Business in Boston, MA. Immediately following high school he joined the US Marine Corp. and served as a sergeant in the Korean War. Due to his dedicated service he earned a purple heart. He was first employed by the Bolton-Smart Company in Boston and then started a long career working in the gun industry. He worked at Smith & Wesson, Sturm Ruger, Thompson Center Arms and Harrington-Richardson Fire Arms. In retirement he worked at Newport Golf Club for the love of the game. He was always happiest when on the golf course playing with his family or friends. He also enjoyed woodworking and watching sports. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and his whistling. He was predeceased by the love of his life, wife Claire (Szymanski) Haines who passed away in 1989 in addition to his parents, two brothers and a sister. Family members include his daughters: Laurie Zakrzewski and her husband Frank of The Woodlands, TX and Wendie Marro and her husband Mark of Bedford, NH.; grandchildren Carrie Curie and her husband Michael Ross of Woodstock, IL and Emilee Marro of Bedford, NH; and great-granddaughter Stella Ross of Woodstock, IL. Friends may call on Thursday from 6 to 8pm at Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street, Claremont. A funeral service will be held Friday at the funeral home at 11am officiated by Rev. Stanley J. Piwowar. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Claremont.
