John L. Andrews, 88 formerly of St. George Island, FL and Sunapee, NH passed away, Sept 7, 2010 in Claremont, NH at Elm Wood Center after a period of failing health due to cancer.  John was born on May 18, 1922 in Newport, NH the son of Louis and Anna (Contogeorge) Andrews. He married Violet E. (Putney) Andrews in October of 1951, she predeceased him in March of 2009 after 57 years of marriage.

He is survived by his four children, son Lewis Andrews of St George Island and Claremont, N H. and his three children, Erica, EJ, & Patrick. Daughters; Marty Wiggins and her husband Ed of  Claremont NH, and their two children Fawn and James, Joanne Andrews-Stevens of New London NH, and her two children Kali and Berkley and Betty Andrews and her daughter Amanda along with Joe Kelley of  Mo., and two great grandchildren.  He is also survived by his brother, Andy Andrews and his wife Polly of Newport NH, and two sisters, Irene Kallelis and her husband Mike of Wolfeboro NH and Claire Karavetsos and her husband Mike of Saugus Ma, and several nephews and nieces.  He was predeceased by a brother, Charles Andrews of Lynn MA.   

John and his late wife, Vi had retired to St George Island FL, in 1991 where he enjoyed playing cribbage with Vi, going fishing, many times giving away his catch of the day to others less successful. Before leaving Sunapee NH, John enjoyed wood working and the antique shop that he owned with Vi. He was a great storyteller and always enjoyed a good laugh with friends.

John served in the US Army during WWII from 1942 to 1946.  John was a member of the American Legion Brewster-Gould-Lee-Rollins-Post 25 in Newport NH for many years.

He also portrayed the comedian Groucho Marx in numerous parades while riding in the ‘Leapin,Lena’ tipping his black derby hat to parade watchers as they drove along.

 In compliance with John’s wishes, a private memorial service will be held at a later date.
