Rene L. Sabetto, 92, of Wildwood Avenue in Claremont died peacefully Wednesday morning April 21, 2010 at Valley Regional Hospital with his two daughters by his side. He was born on March 2, 1918 in Websterville, Vermont the son of Gaetano and Lena (Shampou) Sabetto and was a long time resident of Claremont. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Army 114th Combat Engineers Corp attached to 32nd Red Arrow Division, in the Philippines and Kyusha, Japan. Rene was employed as an inspector at Joy Manufacturing, Bryant Ginder and Jones Lamson. He retired in 1985 from Sturm Ruger in Newport. Rene had a great love for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing and cross-country skiing well into his 80’s. He was an avid golfer and tennis player and enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking pies, especially apple-raspberry and pumpkin. Rene and his wife Nellie traveled to Russia, Italy, Great Britain and Canada and in 2007 he and his two daughters took a cruise to Bermuda. Rene was a an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church for over 50 years, serving on the Vestry and as Junior Warden for two terms. He belonged to the American Legion and was a fervent participant in the local Democratic presidential campaigns. He was a passionate member of the Vermont Granite Museum in Barre, VT and the Lucy Mackenzie Humane Society in West Windsor, VT from where he adopted his cat, Sadie, and was a frequent visitor with the dogs and cats. Rene married Nellie Laskevich on May 18, 1941 and enjoyed sixty years together before her death on February 13, 2001. The family includes two daughters; Christina Theriault of Claremont, NH and Martha Aitken and her husband Douglas of Williston, VT; three grandchildren; Jason Theriault, Sara Theriault and Jonathan Aitken and three great-grandchildren, Natasha, Ludmila and Petr; one nephew, Bill Giles and niece, Janice Reilly. He also leaves behind a special friend, Virginia Fontaine, his devoted homecare providers and Sadie his loyal companion for ten years. Friends may call at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street on Sunday evening April 25th from 6 to 8 PM. Funeral Services will be held Monday morning, April 26th at Eleven O’clock in the Trinity Episcopal Church with The Reverend Susan Langle, Rector, officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. A reception will follow in the church hall.
