Robert Watson Stone, 84, of Michael Avenue in Charlestown, died Tuesday evening, November 23, 2010 at the Elm Wood Health Center in Claremont, surrounded by his family. He was born in Boston, MA on May 18, 1926 the son of Leonard Bradford and Gertrude (Stansfield) Stone and had resided in Charlestown most of his life. Robert was a graduate of Springfield High School and was a veteran of World War II having served as a US Marine in the South Pacific and occupied Japan. He worked as a tree surgeon for Bartlett Tree Co., as a machinist at Jones and Lamson and as a sales engineer in the US, West Berlin, Germany and Zurich, Switzerland. Mr. Stone served the town of Charlestown in many capacities over four decades; as a Selectman for several terms, as a Town Moderator and as a member of many town boards and committees including the Finance Committee, the Planning Board, Conservation Commission, Highway Advisory Board and Town Hall Committee. He also served as School District Moderator and had represented Charlestown on the Fall Mountain Regional School Board, serving as its Chairman for several years. Robert enjoyed hunting and fishing, was an avid skier, biker, horseman, skeet and trap shooter. He was a member and Past Commander of the Charlestown Memorial VFW Post #8497. The surviving family includes his wife, Genevieve “Jenny” (Rocca) Stone of Charlestown whom he married August 20, 1948; one son, Michael Stone and his wife, Liviana of Marathon, FL; one daughter, Deborah Stone of Charlestown; five grandchildren, Kelly Vincel of Charlottesville, VA, Michael W. Stone and his wife, Lelia of Marietta, GA, Jared Streeter of Dover; Dulcia Hillenberg and her husband, Frank of Midland, TX and Marisa Chapin of Charlestown; four great-grandchildren, Cassandra Stone, Cole Vincel, Gabriel Hillenberg and Amelia Hillenberg; one sister, Jean Stone of Unity and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, L. Bradford Stone. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 27th at 3:00 PM in the Charlestown Memorial Chapel, 34 Main Street, Charlestown, with Rev. Priscilla Hull, officiating. Visiting hours will be held from 1-3 PM prior to the service. Military honors will be held after the funeral service by the Charlestown VFW Post#8497 and Fall Mountain High School ROTC.
