Sophia Lewko, 91, a longtime resident of Claremont, died Jan. 16, 2010, at Elm Wood Center after a long illness.

She was born May 1, 1918, in Manchester, the only child of John and Ida (Katsin) Covatas.  The family soon moved to Spencer, Mass. where Sophia and her father continued to live for a time after her mother’s death in the early 1920s.  She and her father later lived in several places before returning to Manchester, where she graduated from Manchester Central High School.  They then moved to Claremont.

She married Frank Lewko on Feb. 15, 1942, in Claremont. They lived in Connecticut for a time after their marriage, but soon returned to Claremont, where they made their home. Mr. Lewko died Dec. 5, 2001.

Prior to her illness, Mrs. Lewko was a homemaker.  She was a meticulous housekeeper, a fine seamstress, and an excellent cook.

She loved to travel and meet people, and in addition to many shorter trips throughout New England, she and her husband traveled to Australia, South America, and Europe.  They had also enjoyed several winters at Anna Maria Island in Florida.

Sophia was a communicant of the Trinity Episcopal Church of Claremont.

Family members include sisters-in-law Alberta McGrath, Gana Lewko, and Margaret Lewko and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William and Eleanor Lewko, all of Claremont; a cousin-in-law, Effie Tolis of Spencer, Mass.; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; and two great-grandnieces.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning January 21st at 11:30 am in the Trinity Episcopal Church, 120 Broad Street, Claremont NH with the Rev. Susan Langle, Rector, officiating.

Friends and family may call from 10 to 11 am prior to the service at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad St. Claremont.

A reception will follow in the church hall.

Burial will be held privately in the spring.
