Dorothy Adam Roman, 89,Claremont businesswoman and former long time resident of Ridge Avenue, died Friday evening, October 28, 2011 at Bellamy Fields Assisted Living in Dover, NH surrounded by family, friends and the kind and loving staff. She was known for her warm smile and dry sense of humor and was a strong advocate of women entrepreneurs.

Dorothy was born in Brattleboro, VT, on September 2, 1922, the daughter of Frederick and Hattie (Bruce) Adam, and had resided in Claremont from 1960 until 2009.

She was the primary operator of The Corner Book Shop that she co-owned with her husband, Joseph, and was an active member of several Claremont business organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce. She was also on the Board of Directors for City Bank & Trust. Dorothy was a volunteer with many Sullivan County groups including S.C.O.R.E. where she provided guidance and support to new business owners.  She was a member of the Claremont Senior Center, Claremont Opera House and Business and Professional Women who honored her as their “Woman of the Year” in 1983. She was a communicant of St Mary’s Church.

Dorothy was the widow of Joseph H. Roman whom she married on Dec. 30, 1948.  The surviving family includes two daughters, Susan Roman and her husband Christopher Regan of Durham and Patricia Roman and her husband Theodore Bardasz of Westford, MA; one son, Michael Roman and his wife, June of Northboro, MA; six remarkable grandchildren; one brother, Alfred Adam of Palm Bay, FL; one sister, Harriet Fisher of Brattleboro, VT; nieces, nephews and cousins.  She was predeceased by two sisters and five brothers.

Friends may call at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street in Claremont, on Thursday, Nov. 3rd from 4 to 7 PM.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday morning at 11 AM in St Mary’s Church. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery and then a luncheon in St. Mary Gym.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date at Bellamy Fields in Dover.
