Eva N. Manning, age 96, a resident of the Cedar Hill Health Care Center, Windsor, Vermont passed away on January 25, 2012.

Born Eva Mae Noetzle on January 29, 1915 in Suffern, New York, she was the first daughter of Charles and Frances (Lawler) Noetzle.  Eva graduated from Suffern High School in 1932 being secretary of her class. In March of 1933 she entered the Southampton Hospital School of Nursing, Southampton, New York graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1936.

Following graduation Eva worked as a RN at the Southampton Hospital.   Eva married Robert E. Manning of Southampton, New York on October 17, 1940.  During the War Years, in 1943, she and the family returned to Suffern to live with her parents at 84 Ramapo Avenue.  In 1947, the family moved to a farm house located on Quaker Road in Pomona, New York.  In January 1949, the Manning family returned to the Suffern area after purchasing their own home, “Sunny Hill”, on Haverstraw Road in what in now known as the Village of Montebello.  Later that year as a way to build family finances to expand their house Eva returned to work on the 11 PM -7 AM  shift as an RN at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern.  She worked there until her retirement in 1978.  During her years at Good Samaritan, Eva held many positions, including that of the night Nursing Supervisor.  Noted by both managers and co-workers for her superior nursing skills she was always happiest when her assignments kept her close to the patients.

In 1999, Eva moved to the Maplewood Assisted Living Facility in Westmoreland, New Hampshire to be closer to family (oldest son, Jonathan). She lived there for five years until moving to Cedar Hill.

Eva was the quintessential mother from the “Greatest Generation”.  Her life was dedicated entirely to her family and caring for others.  Eva endured the hardships and sacrifices of the Great Depression and WW II.  These events and her upbringing positively shaped her outlook on life and guided the way she lived.  Eva was known for her frugality, “make do” spirit, self-sufficiency and particularly for her domestic skills including cooking, sewing and knitting.  She was an avid reader with a passion for crossword puzzles, possessed a wide range of knowledge and never shied away from conversation.  She maintained a household during the day while working nights and cared for her mother and sister during their terminal illnesses.  After the premature death of her husband Robert, she carried on as a single mom to complete the raising of her sons seeing that they had the opportunity for advanced education and rewarding lives.  Upon retirement, she particularly enjoyed spending time with them and her grandsons.

Eva was predeceased by; her husband, Robert E. Manning Sr. on 17 June 1963, her father, Charles Noetzle on 14 March of 1958, her mother Frances Lawler Noetzle on 11 September 1964 and her sister Alice A. on 5 August of 1984.

Eva is survived by her three sons, C. Jonathan Manning of Claremont, New Hampshire, Robert E. Manning Jr.(Joann) of Aiken, South Carolina  and Jeffrey E. Manning (Barbara) of Lewiston, New York and two grandsons, LTCM Donald C. Manning of Leonardtown, Maryland and Justin E. Manning formerly of Warwick, New York, now residing in Walpole, New Hampshire.

Internment, next to her husband, at the Maryrest Cemetery in Darlington (Mahwah), New Jersey will follow a private service at a time convenient to the family.
