Peter W. Callender, 62, of Concord, NH, died Jan. 4, 2012 at Valley Regional Hospital in Claremont, NH following a decades-long battle with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Born in Littleton, NH to Wilbur and Marion (Gould) Callender, Pete grew up in Lisbon, NH. He attended Lisbon Schools and graduated cum laude from Springfield College in 1971. He married the former Carol Hoskiewicz in St. Joseph Church in Claremont, and they celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary this past July 28th. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Pete taught Mathematics at Claremont Junior High and Stevens High School. As a Senior Analyst and Programmer, he was employed at Sanders Associates/ BAE Systems, Chubb Life, Jefferson Pilot Financial, Fidelity Investments, and Alltel. Pete had great love for the outdoors, physical activity, and service to others. He served as a Mathematics teacher in Kenya for the U.S. Peace Corps, and during his time there, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro twice. Pete was an instructor for Project Challenge at Stevens High School, as well as for North Carolina and Dartmouth Outward Bound; a lifeguard at Echo Lake in Franconia Notch State Park and Ellacoya State Park; and a NHIAA basketball official. Pete ran and cycled competitively, frequently participating in marathons and triathlons. He also vigorously enjoyed swimming, hiking, canoeing, ice and rock climbing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. He is survived by his wife, Carol; his daughter, Sarah; his mother-in-law, Stella Hoskiewicz; his father, Wilbur; his brother, James; a nephew; and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother, Marion, and a nephew. Pete’s family would like to thank the various transportation services, care facilities, hospitals, and advocates that provided compassionate care for Pete during his illness, including: Golden Cross, Rockingham, and Care Plus Ambulance Services; TLC Adult Medical Daycare, Merrimack County Nursing Home, Pine Rock Manor, Sullivan County Healthcare, Bedford Hills Care and Rehabilitation Center, Ridgewood Center, and Beacon Hospice; Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Elliot Hospital, Catholic Medical Center, and Valley Regional Hospital; Dr. Vijay Thadani, Dr. Hoke Shirley, Dr. David Bogacz, and Mike Lucio and Don Rabun from the NH Department of Health and Human Services. There are no calling hours. Services will be held privately.
