Claire (Syriac) Leavitt, 82, of 22 Dustin Heights Road in Claremont died Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at home in the presence and comfort of her family following a period of declining health.

She was born Claire Thelma Syriac on June 26, 1930 to Eclida (Daniels) Syriac and George Syriac. She was a life long resident of Claremont. After graduation she worked in the shoe shop. She married Merton Leavitt on March 8, 1952. She was a wonderful mother and homemaker all of her life.

Claire was an avid fan of NASCAR and the New England Patriots. While Merton was alive she went with him to his horseshoe tournaments. She was a member of the Polish American Citizens Club. Claire was much loved by all who knew her and she will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her brother, Donald Syriac and his wife, Konico of Claremont; her son, David and his wife, Regina of Charlestown, her son, Ron and his fiancé, Michelle of Claremont, her son, John and his wife, Christine of Unity and her daughter, Wendy Leavitt of Claremont. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her husband, Merton Leavitt, her daughter, Sheila (Leavitt) Benham, her son-in-law, Norman Benham, her brother, George Syriac, her sister, Gloria Reed and her nephew, Rick Reed.

The family would like to thank Connecticut Valley Home Care and Hospice for all of their wonderful care and support through her illness.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the funeral home to help with expenses.

Friends may call at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street in Claremont, on Tuesday, May 28th from 6 to 8 PM.  Funeral Services will be at 11 AM on Wednesday May 29th at the funeral home with Pastor David Crosby, officiating.  Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.
