Marion O. Baker, 75, of Charlestown, NH died on June 6, 2013 at Springfield Hospital in Springfield, VT. She was born in Newport, NH on August 23, 1937, the daughter of Frank I. and Gladys Pauline (Roper) Berquist. She had attended schools in Lempster and Goshen and was a graduate of Towle High School, Newport in the Class of 1955. Marion was a 4-H member in the 1940’s and had the best 4-H garden in the State of NH. She also belonged to the “chicken of tomorrow” contest and won many ribbons at state fairs for sewing, baked goods and vegetables. Marion had worked at several different places including the Backside Inn, Conrad Manor, Rose’s Store, Saddle River, Jones & Lampson, Subaru of Claremont and Sullivan County Rehabilitation. She belonged to the Silver Mountain Grange in Lempster and Sunapee Mountain Grange in Goshen, was an honorary member of the Rotary Club of Charlestown, a special member of the Unity Fire Department for many years of service and dedication, a den mother to cub scouts when her boys were growing up and a member of the National Rifle Association. Even though Marion could not swim well she had saved several children from drowning. Marion was awarded life membership to the Grafton Sullivan Forest Fire Warden’s Association by the State of NH where she was Secretary and Treasurer for many years. She liked to hunt, fish, sew, dance, travel, play Nintendo, play “Aggravation” and games with her grandchildren and family, watching and feeding birds and wild animals and canning vegetables. The most important things in her life were family and friends. Her family includes her sons, Peter Baker of Charlestown, Dennis Baker and his wife, Lisa of Claremont, Bruce Baker of Unity, Frank Baker of Manchester, Mark Baker and his wife, Amber of Charlestown and Karl Baker and his wife, Denise of Charlestown; 23 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Donald Berquist in 1981, David Berquist in 1997, Burton Berquist in 2003 and Gordon Berquist in 2012; three sisters, Carolyn Blankenship, Phyllis Meloney in 2001 and Claire Sargent in 2005 and a great grandson, Liam Franks in 2009. Visiting hours will be held at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street in Claremont on Monday evening, June 10th from 6 to 8PM. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday morning at 11AM in the Mill Village Cemetery in Goshen, NH with Pastor Clint Brake officiating.
