Merton Henry Bascom, 80, of Charlestown died Thursday evening, May 9, 2013 at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. 

He was born on May 7, 1933 on East Street in Charlestown, NH the son of Merton L. and Charlotte (Green) Bascom.

He graduated from Charlestown High School in 1951. 

Mick moved from East Street to the Old Claremont Road in 1952, after he married Beverly (Chase) Bascom on September 26, 1952 and she died in 1998.

He was always involved in town activities, was a volunteer fireman for 28 years and served along with his father and a brother.  He was the NRA Hunter Safety Instructor for 20 plus years, Boy Scout Leader, Conservation Commission committeeman, lifetime member of the Old #4 Rod & Gun Snowmobile Club. 

Mick was a car enthusiast owning a 1951 Willys Jeepster and his pride a 1922 Wills Sainte Claire.  The maroon car has been sold and is on display at the Wills Museum in Marysville, Michigan.  He was a lifetime member of the Wills Sainte Claire Club, as well as a Charter Member of the local Yesteryear’s Auto Club.

Mick began working at his father’s auto repair shop in 1951 and became owner in 1972 when his Dad retired and Gary, the third generation and present owner, started at Charlestown Garage that same year.  The Charlestown Garage has been a continuous family operation since 1926.

The family includes a son, Gary and his wife Susan; a granddaughter, Tracy Clough; two great grandsons, Leighton and Bailey; a brother, Thomas and his wife, Lauria of Mesa, AZ; also uncles, aunts and cousins.

For the last several years, Mick was a snowbird, spending the winters in Groveland, FL with his partner, Joan Herzig.

He was predeceased by his two brothers, Charlie and Orin.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 18th at 2:00 PM at the Charlestown Congregational Church in Charlestown with The Rev. Susan Grant Rosen, officiating.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the River Valley Animal Protection League, PO Box 860, Charlestown, NH 03603.

Burial will be held privately in Hope Hill Cemetery.
