Ernest E. Garceau, 93, of Newport and previously Claremont died on Thursday morning, October 30, 2014 from lung cancer at the Elm Wood Center in Claremont. He was born in Manchester, NH on May 6, 1921 the son of Eugene and Octavia (Bourgeois) Garceau. He served in the US Army during World War II and recently received recognition as a WWII Wounded Soldier. Ernie worked at Grobet File and retired in 1983. He had previously worked for Avangeline Shoes and International Shoe, he also drove truck for Robert Express of Manchester and Sunbeam bakery. He worked part time for County Coach of Sullivan County for five years. He was a member of the VFW Post #808. Ernie and Polly enjoyed trips to the Maine coast, family gatherings and visiting with friends since their marriage in 2011. He was a creative man with many skills, a loving family man and a loyal friend. He was privileged to participate in the Honor Flight New England Program, visiting Washington DC monuments and Veteran’s memorials. His death is a heartfelt loss to his wife, Polly Fortune-Garceau of Newport; his stepchildren, Bonnie Rivard of Claremont, Robert W. Amell, Sr. of Myrtle Beach, SC, Cheryl Broughan and husband, Peter of Gill, MA, Pamela Amell Levasseur and husband, Stuart of South Royalton, VT, Glenn Fortune of Honolulu, HI, Thomas Fortune of Warren and Dennis Bundy of Lebanon; several grandchildren and step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Olive Evelyn (LaClair) Garceau, and his son, Ernest Garceau, Jr. A graveside service will be held at the West Claremont Burying Ground on November 8th at 10AM with military honors. A memorial service will follow at My Father’s House, North Main Street in Newport at 11:30AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, Lake Sunapee VNA & Hospice or the Honor Flight New England. |
