Marie Lucia Gilbert, 97 of Claremont, passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at Valley Regional Hospital in Claremont.

She was born in North Troy, VT on May 18, 1917 the daughter of Adelard and Mary Jane (Petrin) Arel.

Lucia was employed as a seamstress by Arel’s Upholstery Company for nearly 30 years and had retired when a fire destroyed the building in February of 1985.  She had previously worked in the shoe shop and at Joy Manufacturing for 6 years.

She is the widow of Lucien M. Gilbert whom she married on July 28, 1945 and he died on August 7, 1986.

Lucia enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting and sewing, which she donated to Valley Regional Hospital maternity ward and family and friends.

She loved spending time with her family and going to Lake Kolelemook in Springfield, NH. 

The family includes two sons, Roger Gilbert and his wife, Judy of Cornish and Richard M. Gilbert of Claremont; two grandchildren, Christopher Gilbert and his wife Jessie of Cornish and Christina Gonyea and her husband, Chris of Cornish; two great grandchildren, Taylor and Rayce Gilbert; several nieces, nephews & cousins.

She was pre-deceased by four brothers, Albert Arel, Theode H. Arel, Lucien D. Arel and Wilfred E. Arel; three sisters, Bertha Spreadbury, Veridienne Cloutier and Jeanne Paquette.

Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, morning at Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street, Claremont, NH from 9-11 AM.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary Church on Saturday, October 11th at 11 AM, with Rev. Father Shawn M. Therrien, officiating.

Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.
