Nicholas C. Marro, Sr., 89, of Nel Mar Heights in Claremont died on September 3, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Claremont, NH on August 28, 1925 the son of Carminie and Mary (Cillo) Marro. Nick was a graduate of Stevens High School in the Class of 1942. He attended the Franklin Institute in Boston and was a graduate of the NH Technical Institute in 1949. He served in the US Marines during World War II from 1943 – 1945 and was in the South Pacific; Iwo Jima and Guam. Nick was the owner and operator of N.C. Marro Plumbing & Heating Supply Co. and Marro Home Center. He was also known to many as a kind and committed landlord. He enjoyed watching sports, and was a faithful follower of the Red Sox, Arizona University basketball and the New England Patriots, which he was a long time season ticket holder. He was an adept storyteller and he loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was an excellent cook and loved to have holiday parties and gatherings. He also enjoyed being at his store and talking business with customers, family and his daughter, Patty. Nick was a hard worker and a great teacher. Nick was a proud citizen of the community and participated as a member of many committees and organizations. He was a member of the BPOE #879, VFW Post# 808, the American Legion Post 29 and the Polish American Club. He was on the Police Facility Study Committee, the Housing Code Committee, the City Planning Board Urban Renewal, the Historic District Committee, Goodwin Community Center Commission where he was the Chairman from 1978 to 1981, the Valley Regional Hospital Board of Incorporators, the NH Vocational Technical College Advisory Board and was instrumental in fulfilling the City of Claremont Ordinance 108 “Licensing of Plumbers and Regulation of Plumbing”, Executive Board CPM Paper Manufacturers, the Claremont Running Track Committee, Hospital Building Fund Special Gifts Committee and the City of Claremont Board of Appeals. He also belonged to the Booster Club, Friends of Football, Friends of Soccer, in which he organized the annual banquets and awards, Physical Education and Athletic Committee, Claremont School Planning and Development Committee for Improvement and Upgrading City School System, the Craft Committee for Vocational Plumbing & Heating Curriculum, Planning and Implementation of Regional Vocational Education Center Committee, Stevens Library Facility Committee and the Dinner Dance Committee of St Mary’s School. He was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church where he was President for 3 years of the Parish Council. He was an usher and an organizer-worker of church sponsored affairs, such as Annual Sports Night, Annual Friendship Party and The Annual Lawn Party where he specialized in the cooking of the infamous hot dogs. He was also instrumental in the planning of the St. Joseph Church 50th Anniversary Celebration, the Pastor 25th Anniversary Celebration and Chairman of the Catholic Charities Drive. Nick had received many awards including the Chamber of Commerce “Citizen of the Year” in 1977, the Rotary Club, honorary Member for Exceptional Civic, Church and Community Service in 1982, the Great American Family Award City of Claremont in 1982 and the State of NH Great American Family Award in 1982. The family includes his wife, Arline (Karpinski) Marro whom he married on October 20, 1956; four sons, Nicholas C. Marro Jr. and his wife, Nancy of Claremont, Mark Marro and his wife, Wendie of Bedford, Peter Marro of Falmouth, ME and Stanley Marro of Claremont; one daughter, Patricia Miller and her husband, George “Larry” of Claremont; ten grandchildren, Kylah Lent and her husband, Chris, Leigha Marro, Hannah Marro, Nicholas “Bud” Marro, Emilee Marro, Jonathan Marro, Corey Marro, Jessica Marro, Michael Miller and Sydney Miller; three great grandchildren, Zachary, Zain and Zayden Lent; his brothers and sisters, Madeline Barbieri, Albert Marro, Katherine Moore, Paul Marro and Carmella Tenney; in addition Bonnie Wyand, Kaleb Tarczewski, Father Stanley J. Piwowar and numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and cousins. He was preceded in death by his four brothers and one sister, Anthony Marro, Marion Marro, Dominic Marro, Charles Marro and Joseph Marro. Friends and family may call at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street in Claremont on Monday, September 8th from 4 to 8PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Church, 58 Elm Street in Claremont on Tuesday morning at 11AM. Burial with military honors will follow in West Claremont Burying Ground.
