Bernice May Johnson, 94, of Cornish, NH died on Monday morning, April
6, 2015 at her home.
She was born in Claremont, NH on May 9, 1920 the daughter of James
Brewster and Laura Grace (Skinner) Fitch and was a lifelong resident of
Cornish, NH
She had worked for the State of NH Employment Services in Laconia then
transferred to the Claremont offices in 1942. In 1943 she went to
Washington DC as a secretary to US Congressman Foster Stearns, and then
worked for a corporate lawyer, Norman Littell. In 1947, she became the
Cornish Town Clerk where she would work for 19 years. She also worked
for the St. Gaudens Bookstore from 1989 until 2002.
Bernice was a member of the Cornish Grange #25 for over 50 years, was a
charter member of the Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, the Garden
Club and a member of the United Church of Cornish. She was on the board
of Library Trustees and the Cornish Honor Society.
She was a past director and secretary for the Cornish Fair
Association.
The family includes her children, Stephen and Bev Grimes Johnson of
Bradford, VT, Bruce and Chris Johnson of Westminster, CA, Ronald Johnson
of Plainfield, Beth Brown of Newport and Robin and Michael
Monette of Cornish; nine grandchildren and three great
grandchildren; her brother, Howard Fitch of CA, also many nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Conan Arby Johnson in 1999,
whom she married on June 1, 1946; two grandson, Robert and David
Johnson; two brothers, Orville Fitch and Wendell Fitch and three
sisters, Clara Fitch, Bethena Wooten and Laura Woodward
A memorial service will be held at the United Church of Cornish on
Center Road on Friday, April 10th at 11AM.
