September 1, 1920 –February 24, 2015.
Priscilla (Bates) Belway of Bradenton, Florida and Newport,
Vermont went to be with God on Tuesday, February 24, at the age of 94.
She passed away at the Cedar Hill Continuing Care Community in
Windsor VT surrounded by her two daughters, Deborah Smith of Chester, VT
and Donelle Wright, of Holden, MA.
Priscilla was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 39
years, Ted, and her brother, Philip Bates.
She is survived by 4 grandchildren, Laurel Dodge (and husband,
Joe) of Rumney, NH, Ryan Smith (and wife, Melanie) of Penacook, NH, and
Erin and Jana Wright of Holden, MA, and 5 great-grandchildren, Gretchen
and Olivia Dodge, and Dominic, Victor, and Gavin Smith as well as a
sister-in-law Marion Bates of Bradenton, FL and 3 nieces and a nephew
and their families.
Priscilla was born in St. Johnsbury, VT and lived most of her life in
Newport, VT before moving to Bradenton, FL in her later years.
She was a graduate of Derby Academy (1937) and Lyndon Normal
School (1939) and taught elementary school for more than 30
years—retiring from the Newport City School Department in 1983.
Priscilla was a member of the American Legion, Post 21, the
Mizpah Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Vermont Retired
Teachers Association.
She loved music, played the piano and found enormous enjoyment from
watching her children and grandchildren develop as musicians.
Priscilla loved to travel.
She and Ted saw much of the United States together in their RV;
later in life Priscilla joined many tours seeing Australia and New
Zealand, Scandinavia, Germany, Italy, and Eastern Europe, Hawaii and
Alaska. Priscilla
loved her country, and was proud of both Ted and Ryan’s military
service. As a tribute to
her patriotism, the family is requesting that any memorial donations be
made to the Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org
) Services will be held in the
Spring with interment at the Derby Center Cemetery, Derby, VT. |
