Ruth Marion Smith, 95, of Wheeler Avenue in Charlestown, died Wednesday Morning, July 15, 2015 at Elm Wood Center at Claremont.

She was born in Enfield, NH on December 2, 1919 the daughter of Thomas J. Colby and Evlyn F. (Whittier) Farwell.

She married Rolla H. Smith on October 16, 1936 and he died on January 24, 1998.

Ruth had worked at the Foundation for Biblical Research starting out serving meals and cleaning for the trustees that lived there. She went on to becoming the housekeeper and then doing payroll, the household books, managed the bookstore and the biblical library.

In 1978 she established the Charlestown Historical Society and had served as President and Treasurer.  She was a Library Trustee for 10 years, on the Zoning Board for 3 years and on the Recreation Committee for 6 years.

Ruth enjoyed snowmobiling, camping and spending time with her family.

The family includes one son, David R. Smith and his wife, Teresa; three daughters, Eleanor Berquist and her husband, Jack; Rose Smith-Hull and her husband, Raymond and Luci Smith all of Charlestown; one brother, Carlton Colby of Windsor, CT; ten grandchildren, several great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by three brothers, Donald Colby, Lewis Colby and Ralph Colby; two sisters, Rose Matthews and Vivian Hayward Naschke and her beloved cat, Snuffy.

Visiting hours will be held at the Charlestown Memorial Chapel, 34 Main Street on Monday evening from 6-8 PM.

Funeral services will be held at the Charlestown Congregational Church on Tuesday Morning July 21st at 11AM.

Interment will follow in Pine Crest Cemetery in Charlestown.

A reception will be held in the church hall’s pine room.
