Helen B. Powell, 84, of South Main Street in Newport, NH, died Friday afternoon, September 1, 2006 at her home.

She was born in Mascoma, NH  on February 20, 1922 and was the adopted daughter of Edwin and Carrie (Gray) Russell of Lebanon.

She attended Lebanon Schools, received her nursing degree and was also a graduate of Lebanon College with a gourmet cooking degree.

She resided in Newport for the past twenty-eight years. She previously lived in Meriden for eighteen years and also lived in Claremont, Walpole, Franklin and Lebanon.

She worked as a licensed nurse at local hospitals, nursing homes and also did private nursing from Plainfield to Hanover. She worked with the Women Supportive Services and Sugar River Homemakers.  For several years she was the Nanny for the Thomas and Chickie Ruger family in Croydon.

Helen enjoyed cooking, loved each one of her family and was always telling others about her love for Jesus Christ.

She was the widow of Albon L. Powell who died in 1989 and was also pre-deceased by  two sons, Douglas Aldrich and Robert Aldrich; one daughter, Beverly Green; a grandson, David Aldrich; two sisters, Josie Brown and Hattie Duling and two brothers, John Downing and Willis Downing.

The surviving family includes six sons, George Aldrich of Cornish, Raymond Aldrich of Goshen, Edwin Aldrich of Reidsville, GA, Michael Powell of Spofford, David Powell of Goshen and Albon Powell of Greenfield, MA; two daughters, Sara Jane Chapman of Unity and JoAnne Hertzler of Newport; thirty-five grandchildren; forty-eight great-grand-children; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Robert Aldrich of Enfield and many nieces, nephews and special friends including Brenda and Robin.

A Memorial Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, September 6th at Eleven O’clock in the Christ Community Church in Plainfield, on Route 12A, with Rev. Brian Sayers Pastor officiating along with Rev. Brian Edwards Pastor of the Faith Chapel of Newport, co-officiating.

Interment will follow in Plainfield Cemetery, on Route 12A in Plainfield.
