Anthony "Rocco" Russo, 91, formerly of Marion Phillips Apartments and
previously of the Claremont Manor, died Saturday evening, May 26, 2007 at
Woodlawn Nursing Home in Newport where he had been a patient for the past
two months. He was born in Boston, MA on January 26, 1916 the son of Frank
and Marie P. (Celeste) Russo. He lived in Pawtucket and Providence, RI for
many years also in Maine and Vermont for a short time and lived in Claremont
since his 1979.
He was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Army, was at the
Battle of the Bulge and shook hands with Gen. Patten. He worked as a
machine operator at Chemical Products Corporation in E. Providence, RI.
His first wife, Mary (Torti) Russo died March 8, 1979 and was predeceased by
a daughter at a young age. While in Claremont, he had close friends, Helen
Clark, who was his long time dancing partner and Sheriff Michael Prozzo, who
would take him in his cruiser for the Memorial Day parade almost every year.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #29 of Claremont.
Friends may call at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street in Claremont
on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be
celebrated Friday morning, June 1st at Eleven O'clock in St Mary's Church
with Rev. Father Shawn M. Therrien, Pastor officiating. Interment with full
military honors provided by the Claremont American Legion Post #29 will
follow in St Mary's Cemetery.
