Edward Michael Gore (Goroszewski), 86, died peacefully at home, with his wife Edwarda and family close by, in Claremont, NH on Wednesday, January 24, 2007. Edward was born in New York City, November 6, 1920, the son of Michael Goroszewski and Kazimiera Toman. He grew up in Manhattan, graduating from Fordham College in 1942 with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Biology. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942. His battalion was attached to the 10th Mountain Division in Colorado. He received desert training, paratrooper training, and attended the newly developed “German School” while serving with Army Intelligence at Camp Ritchie, Maryland. He served in New Guinea and the South Pacific and received an honorable discharge in 1946. Edward returned to NYC and completed a Master’s of Science Degree in 1949 at Fordham University, and performed research at Cornell Medical School and Rockefeller Institute. In 1950, Edward began his career as a toxicologist at the Wyeth Institute for Medical Research, the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology. During his 32 years at Wyeth, he authored and presented numerous scientific research papers, served as group leader of experiments, two of which were the early studies on Saccharin and the development of Excedrin. He also served as an abstractor for Chemical Abstracts. He is remembered in Who’s Who Men of Science. He was a member of numerous scientific societies. After retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Gore moved from Levittown, PA to Claremont, NH to be closer to family. Edward’s lifelong love of learning continued in both his professional and personal life. He received additional graduate degrees from Villanova University and The Graduate School, New School for Social Research, studying Philosophy. His interests and knowledge ranged from science, philosophy, religion, great literature, word origins, to sports. He was never without one of his treasured books nearby, always eager to launch into a discussion of philosophy, the life and work of Samuel Johnson, the books of Ayn Rand, or the latest mystery from Elizabeth George. One of our enduring images is of Edward in his black beret, sitting in his breezeway, book or crossword puzzle in hand. In addition to his scholarly work and interests, Mr. Gore was an accomplished athlete. Before he served in WWII, he was a left-handed pitcher in the minor league system (Triple A) for the St. Louis Cardinals. While still in the army, he signed a contract to play running back for the National Football League, Washington Redskins. Edward was a walking encyclopedia on sports trivia, and he especially enjoyed watching his beloved St. Louis Cardinals win the 2006 World Series. Edward is survived by his beloved wife, Edwarda Peine Gore of 58 years; son Dr. Paul Gore of Tujunga, California, and his daughter Terra; Phillip Gore and his wife Jeanine of Moorpark, California; daughter Erika and her husband, Dr. Thomas Bacon and their two children Mitchell and Meredith; and brother, Joseph Gore and his wife Eugenia of Clifton NJ, and their two children and grandchildren.
