Edward Jewett Tenney II, 83, Ft. Oglethorpe, GA and long-time resident of
Claremont, NH, died Monday, June 4, 2007, after a sudden decline in health.
Edward was born in Claremont, NH, on January 26, 1924, the son of
Edward B. and Rachel (Demeritt) Tenney. In addition to his parents he was
predeceased by one brother S. Bradley Tenney and Edward's first wife, Joan
K. Tenney, in 1982 and his infant grandchild, Mary Rae Fontaine, in 1980.
Edward is a graduate of Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, NH,
received his undergraduate degree from New England College in Henniker, NH
and his Juris Doctorate Degree from Wake Forrest University. He practiced
law in Bellows Falls, VT and Claremont, NH. He was elected to eight
consecutive terms as Sullivan County Attorney.
Edward served as a bomber pilot in the US Army Air Corps in World
War II where he earned several medals and awards, including two Purple
Hearts and a distinguished service award. He served on the Claremont Police
Commission, the Claremont School Board and was a member of the
Sullivan-Windsor County Sheriff's Mounted Posse. Edward is a 32nd degree
Mason, Knight Templar, and a Shriner. He also served 32 years with the Civil
Air Patrol.
Edward Tenney retired from law practice in 1991. At this time, he
and his wife, Della, whom he married in 1983, left the Tenney family home on
River Road and moved to a new home in Punta Gorda, Florida. The Tenney
Family lived on River Road for over half a century. In 2004, Hurricane
Charley totally destroyed the home in Florida. Edward and his wife barely
made it to safety. They left Florida and moved to Georgia where his wife's
family lived. They have remained in Georgia up to the time of his death.
In addition to his wife, who remains in Georgia, Edward is
survived by three children and seven grandchildren: Cyndee Tenney and her
children, Rachel, Joan and Dustin; Judge Edward B. Tenney, his wife Holly
and their children, Allison, Mariah and Matthew, and Jill Guyer and her son
Ethan, all living in New Hampshire. A nephew, a niece, four step-children,
several cousins and his dog, Reb also survive him.
Following a memorial service in Georgia, his children will bring
Edward back to his hometown of Claremont, NH.
On Monday, June 18th 2007, from 4:30pm to 6 pm, there will be
visiting hours at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street, Claremont,
NH.
A memorial service will begin at 6pm at the Funeral Home with Rev. David
Crosby, Pastor of the First Baptist Church, Officiating.
Interment will follow in the family's plot in the West Claremont Burial
Grounds in Union Cemetery across from the Union Church on Old Church Rd.
