Grace Delora Curtis, 89, died Friday morning, April 20, 2007 at the Sullivan
County Health Care in Unity where she had resided since 2001. She was born
in Lowell, MA on April 9, 1918, the daughter of James Edward and Delora
(Wood) Mountford and was a former longtime resident of Newport and also
lived in Charlestown and Claremont. She was raised in Lowell, MA by her
father and step-mother, Hannah (Peterson) and was a graduate of Lowell High
School and attended business school upon graduation. Grace attended the
Matthews Memorial Methodist Church in Lowell and was a member of the Lowell
Order of Eastern Star. She worked as a secretary for Beneficial Finance in
Nashua and Claremont and also worked at the Sullivan County Jail for several
years.
Grace was well known for her love of cats and dogs.
She was the widow of John C. "Jack" Curtis whom she married December 8, 1951
and who died April 17, 1966. She was also predeceased by two brothers, John
and Albert Mountford and one sister, Mary K. Lehtinen.
The surviving family includes three nieces, Mary Ellen Thro and her husband
Stuart of Owls Head, ME, Alicia W. Black and her husband Donald of Groton,
MA and Eleanor L. Osborn and her husband Paul of Norfolk, MA, and six great
nieces and one great nephew.
A graveside committal service will be held in Mt View Cemetery at a later
date. The Stringer Funeral Home and Crematorium, 146 Broad Street in
Claremont is in charge of arrangements.
