John Newton Phillips, 82, of Eaton Road in Swanzey Center, NH, died Sunday morning, November 12, 2006 at the Sullivan County Health Care in Unity. He was born in Keene, NH on February 18, 1924 the son of Charles and Elizabeth (Newton) Phillips and had resided in Swanzey for nearly 6 years. He graduated from Keene High School and lived in Keene for over 50 years. Mr. Phillips retired as Deputy Fire Chief from the City of Keene Fire Department where he worked for twenty-six years. He enjoyed carpentry work. He surviving family includes his wife, Evelyn (Doody) Smith Phillips of Swanzey Center; two sons, David Phillips of Cobleskill, NY and Bruce Phillips of Thornwood, NY and four grand-children. He was pre-deceased by his first wife, Harriett (Randall) Phillips in 1999 and his parents and step father, Herman Higgins. A memorial service will be held in St Bernard's Church in Keene on Friday, November 17th at Eleven O'clock with Rev. Father Dan Lamothe, officiating. Interment will be in Woodland North East Division Cemetery in Keene.
