Lawrence Douglas (Doug) Smith, 73, of Hatteras Avenue, Winter Haven, FL, beloved husband of Joan Rogers, passed away Saturday, January 21st at Lebanon Center, Lebanon, NH after a courageous battle with cancer surrounded by his family and friends. He was born in East Randolph, VT on October 26, 1932, the son of Lawrence L. "LL" and Agnes (Rylander) Smith and had resided in Charlestown most of his life. Doug and Joan began their lives together on November 20, 1993 and resided in Charlestown, NH before retiring to Winter Haven, FL three months ago. They loved to go camping in their motor home with their beloved dog, Benjii. He was a graduate of Charlestown High School and was a veteran of the US Navy having served on the USS Plymouth Rock as a 3rd Class Gunner Mate during the Korean Conflict. He was self employed and worked with his brother at Smith Brothers Construction and later owned and operated Smith Oil Co. He retired in 1996 from the Charlestown Auto Sales on the Old Springfield Road where he worked for 32 years. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Charlestown Memorial VFW Post No. 8497. He was a former member of the Claremont Elks and Moose Lodge. Doug enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, NASCAR racing, the Boston Red Sox and he also enjoyed collecting Cadillacs and model cars. He was very proud of his granddaughter Lori and his great white hunter, Forrest. He also looked forward to having Dunkin Donuts and coffee with his brother Skip. Doug is survived by his loving wife, Joan of Winter Haven, FL; his brother Reginald "Skip" Smith of Charlestown; a sister Gladys "Sis" McCormack of West Hartford, CT; a sister-in-Law, Jeanne Smith of Rutland, VT; three daughters, Lillian Dunn and Roy Mark of Springfield, VT, Brenda Smith and Tom Strate of Charlestown and Kim Smith and Tom Porter of Chester, VT; a step-son Michael Rogers and step-daughters, Ona Pecor, Alesia Isenor; grandchildren, Lori Blair, Melissa Coleman, Samantha Simonds, Homer and Matt Dunn; step-grandchildren, Jason, Kyle, Justin, Nathan, Tommy, Megan and Mandi; four great-grandchildren, Forrest Coleman, Michael, Timothy and Kaya Rogers and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his first wife, Nancy Hamm in 1981, one brother, William R. Smith in 1997 and a nephew Reginald A. Smith in 2001. Friends may call at the Charlestown Memorial Chapel, 34 Main St., Charlestown, NH on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 pm. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday morning, January 25th at eleven o'clock in the Chapel with Rev. Cynthia Batten, officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Crest Cemetery, Charlestown, NH. |
