Malcolm Holmes Rice, 79, of River Bend Drive in Newport, formerly of 44
Bonnie Brae Dr. in Alstead, NH, died Saturday morning, October 13, 2007 at
the Woodlawn Nursing Home in Newport.
He was born in Sunderland, MA on July 25, 1928 the son of Julian and Mildred
(Moore) Rice. He had resided in Alstead since 1982 and had previously lived
in Leverett, Ma most of his life.
He served in the Massachusetts National Guard.
Mr. Rice worked as a machinist for 12 years for the Montague Machine Co in
Turners Falls, MA, previously worked as an auxiliary police officer in
Montague, MA for 3 years, for Round's Burner Service for 5 years, for Haynes
Brothers Construction in Wilmington, VT and for Bishop Trucking in Alstead
as a truck driver.
He was a member of the Third Congregational Church in Alstead.
He was the widower of Judith Murphy who died Jan. 13, 2001.
The surviving family includes his wife, Joan (Pasterczyk) LaCourse Rice of
Newport whom he married May 19, 2003; one son, Jeffrey Rice of Irving, MA;
three daughters, Linda Johnston of Greenfield, MA, Cheryl Johnson of North
Carolina and Michelle Rice of Northfield, MA; one step-son, Donald P.
LaCourse of Newport; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one sister,
Shirley Johnson of Greenfield, MA also several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was pre-deceased by a step-son, Roger "Chipper" Murphy, a son, Bruce Rice
in Aug of 2006 and 2 brothers, Arnold Rice and Paul Rice.
Friends may call at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street in Claremont
on Monday from 6 to 8 PM.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 16th at Eleven O'clock in the
Third Congregational Church of Alstead with Rev. Janice Howe, Pastor
officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery in Alstead.
