Merton D. Thompson, Sr., 90, of Maple Avenue in Claremont, died Tuesday
afternoon, March 6, 2007, at the Sullivan County Health Care.
He was born in Keene, NH, on May 4, 1916, the son of Guy and Annie (O'Brien)
Thompson and had resided in Claremont for seventy-two years. He was raised
in Keene and graduated from Keene High School in 1934. While still a
student, he worked three summers at Dartmouth Woolen Mill in Claremont. He
retired from Dartmouth Woolen Mill in 1983 as its Superintendent, having run
most departments during the fifty-three years of his employment.
He was a parishioner of St Mary's Church and a member of Father Cote Council
#1820 Knights of Columbus for over fifty years. He was a Past President of
the Claremont Rotary Club and received the Paul Harris Fellowship. Mr.
Thompson was a loyal follower of Stevens girls' sports and was especially
proud when they recognized his attendance.
He was the widower of Bernadette I. Favreau whom he married on September 14,
1940, at St Mary's Church and she died May 23, 1996.
He was also predeceased by a sister, Rosamond Dumayne and a brother, Edward
Thompson.
His surviving family includes one daughter, Ellen E. Adams and her husband,
David of Walpole; one son, M. Dan Thompson, Jr. and his wife, Kathy of
Claremont; four grandchildren, Chris Adams and his wife, Laura of Walpole,
Scott Adams and his wife, Kara of West Boxford, MA, Amy T. St Pierre and her
husband, John and Ann Thompson all of Claremont and two great-grandchildren,
Bryn Adams of Walpole and Jack St. Pierre of Claremont also two nieces, one
nephew and cousins.
Friends may call at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street, on Friday
evening, from 6 to 8 PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, Saturday morning, March 10th
at Ten-Thirty O'clock in St Mary's Church with Rev. Father Stanley J.
Piwowar, officiating.
Interment will follow in Union Cemetery.
Members of the Knights of Columbus are asked to meet at the Funeral Home
Friday evening at 6:30 PM for services.
The family suggests that donations may be made in his memory to the Sullivan
County Health Care, Mac Connell Unit, 5 Nursing Home Drive, Unity, NH 03743.
