Stanley Nelson Demars, 85, formerly of Spofford St. in Claremont and Quail Hollow in West Lebanon died Thursday morning, July 13, 2006 at Cedar Hill Continuing Care Community in Windsor, VT. He was born in Claremont, NH on March 20, 1921 the son of Nelson J. and Sophronia M. (Fontaine) Demars and had been a resident of Claremont for eighty years prior to moving to Lebanon in 2001 and most recently to Windsor, VT. He attended St Mary's School. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the US Army with the 124th Ordnance Heavy Maintenance Company Field Army through five major campaigns including Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He also served two years in the Navy Reserve. Stanley was employed for three years at the Old Sullivan Machine Co., for three years at Watertown Arsenal in MA, for seventeen years in the tool room and as a machinist at Joy Manufacturing Co. in Claremont and for twenty-one years as a machinist at North East Tool and Machine Corp. in North Hartland, VT, retiring in July of 1984. He was a call fireman with the Claremont Fire Department for twenty-three years, retiring as a Captain of the Ladder Company in 1978. He was a member of the American Legion Post #29 of Claremont and a former member of Father Cote Council #1820 Knights of Columbus. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Claremont and St. Denis Church in Hanover. He did volunteer work at the Sugar River Technical Center in Newport, helped with the Meals on Wheels in West Lebanon and was a volunteer at the Cornish Fair. The surviving family includes his wife, Georgette C. (Poisson) Demars of Windsor, VT whom he married on November 10, 1943; two sons, Robert N. Demars and his wife, Luella of Cornish and John S. Demars and his wife, Jeanne of Acworth; three daughters, Patricia A. Sackevich and her husband, Walter of Burlington, Vt, Marie A. Spencer and her husband, Winston, Jr. of Plainfield and Kathryn A. Purmort and her husband, Bradley of Newport; 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Harnois Dubreuil on November 9, 2002. Friends may call at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street in Claremont on Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday morning, July 17th at Eleven O'clock in St Mary's Church with Rev. Father Shawn M. Therrien, Pastor, officiating. Interment will be at a later date in St Mary's Cemetery. Members of the Claremont Call Firemen will be pall bearers and the American Legion Post #29 will conduct military honors at the end of Mass at St Mary's Church.
