Wilfred L. "Giz" Girard, 89, a long time resident of Chellis Street and 67 Maple Avenue, died Monday afternoon, April 3, 2006 at the Sullivan County Health Care surrounded by his family. He was born in Littleton, NH on May 26, 1916 the son of Ludger and Olianna (Coyer) Girard and resided in Claremont for seventy-two years. He attended school, through the fourth grade in Littleton and graduated from St Mary's High School in the Class of 1935 where he played baseball, basketball and football. He later helped coach basketball at St Mary's and CYO basketball. He was a member of the Circle Eight Square Dance. Giz owned and operated Girard Trucking and Girard Oil for many years and sold the Oil Company to Chevron in 1962. He later worked at Jones & Lamson in Springfield, VT and retired in 1978 from OH Lewis Oil Company. Giz was very supportive of his family and helped his son with the ambulance and racing for many years. He was the widower of Irene C. (Foisy) Girard whom he married on Feb. 8, 1937 and she died Jan.19, 2004. The surviving family includes one son, Richard W. Girard and his wife, Patricia; three grandsons, Ross R. Girard, Dale Girard and Todd Girard and eleven great-grandchildren all of Claremont. Friends may call at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street on Wednesday afternoon and evening from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday morning, April 6th at eleven o'clock in St Mary's Church with Rev. Father Leonard R. Foisy, his brother-in-law, officiating. Interment will follow in St Mary's Cemetery. The family suggests that donations may be made in his memory to the Sullivan County Health Care, Activity Room, 5 Nursing Home Drive, Unity, NH 03743. |
