Paul was born to Nelson and Goldina Gonyea
and was raised in Claremont NH with his beloved sister Ann. In 1950, at
the age of 18, he enlisted in the Army. He was a minesweeper in the 27th
Wolfhound Regiment during the height of the Korean Conflict. In 1950,
Paul sent his Army paychecks to his parents to totally fund an end of
season dinner banquet for the Steven's High School football team. After
returning to mainland in 1952, he married his high school sweetheart
Carolyn Currier. They had four sons, Warren Charles of Vernon CT, the
late Andrew Paul, Rodney Nelson and his wife Tracey of Sunapee NH, and
John Edward of Lebanon NH. He truly loved to be called Uncle Paul or
Grampa by his many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and
great-grandchildren. He was a 20 year resident of Wallingford, CT, where
he volunteered many, many hours in Wallingford youth sports. He was a
Little League coach throughout the 1960's and a past Little League
President. Paul ran the Youth Biddy Basketball League. He started a
youth bowling league in 1962. It actually started when Paul chaperoned a
neighborhood bowling trip to nearby T Bowl Lanes. The kids had so much
fun that they asked him if he could do it every Saturday. After the
first year, the venue changed to Colony Lanes. Starting with
approximately 10 kids, and ballooning to well over 200 Wallingford
youths, bowling in different age groups by 1970. The younger kids bowled
on Saturday mornings and the high school age kids on Sunday mornings.
The highlight of league play was the end of season Bowling Banquet,
which Paul organized. In 1971, after over 16 years with Pratt and
Whitney Aircraft, Paul retired as a department supervisor. From 1971 to
1976, Paul and Carolyn successfully ran Gonyea's Deli. Paul and Carolyn
moved back to their home state, New Hampshire in 1976. He retired from
Sturm, Ruger in 1996 after 16 years. For the past 15 years, Paul and Carolyn lived at Clearwater Cascade Retirement Community, Pinellas Park, FL. On March 15th 2012, Paul and Carolyn celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Paul was an active member of Sacred Heart Church. He was a 4th Degree Knight for the Knights of Columbus. Paul was also a member of the American Legion, VFW, Disabled American Veterans Post 13, Korean War Veterans, and Forgotten Korean War Veterans Post 263. Paul will be sorely missed by his many relatives and friends. The world lost an incredible man who was respected and loved by many. A full military funeral was held April 4th in Pinellas Park. A grave site service will be held at Elkins Cemetery, New London NH at a later date. |
